The Future Is Standing Right in Front of Us

There are moments in life when you are reminded why your work matters. For me, those moments often happen when I am standing in a room filled with osteopathic medical students.

I see the excitement in their eyes as they begin their journey. I hear the passion in their voices when they talk about serving patients, improving healthcare and making a difference in their communities. I watch them eagerly absorb knowledge, seek mentorship and embrace the values that define osteopathic medicine. In those moments, I am reminded that the future of our profession is not a distant concept—it is standing right in front of us.

Over the past two years, I have had the privilege of witnessing a renewed energy surrounding osteopathic medicine in Oklahoma. Students are more engaged than ever. Physicians are stepping forward to mentor, teach and invest in the next generation. Supporters are rallying behind initiatives that strengthen our profession and create opportunities for future leaders. There is a sense of momentum that is both inspiring and contagious.

At the Oklahoma Educational Foundation for Osteopathic Medicine, our mission has always been rooted in supporting students and advancing osteopathic medical education. Yet over the last two years, we have seen firsthand how powerful that mission can be when a community comes together around a common purpose.

Whether it is awarding scholarships, providing educational opportunities, supporting research or connecting students with practicing physicians, every effort has a ripple effect. The impact extends far beyond financial assistance. It sends a message to students that they are valued, that their dreams matter and that an entire profession is invested in their success.

One of the most rewarding experiences has been meeting students who have benefited from the foundation's support. Many are balancing demanding academic schedules, financial pressures and the challenges that come with pursuing a medical degree. Despite those obstacles, they remain committed to serving others and improving the lives of their future patients.

Their dedication is inspiring.

These students are not simply preparing for a career; they are preparing to become the physicians who will care for our families, lead our hospitals, serve our rural communities and advocate for the health of future generations. They represent the very best of what osteopathic medicine stands for—compassion, service, innovation and a commitment to treating the whole person.

As I travel across the state and attend events with students, residents and physicians, I am continually encouraged by the enthusiasm surrounding our profession. There is a renewed excitement about what lies ahead. We are seeing stronger connections between generations of physicians, greater engagement from supporters and an increased desire to invest in the future of osteopathic medicine.

That excitement is not about buildings, campaigns or programs alone. It is about people. It is about the student who receives a scholarship and gains confidence that their goals are within reach. It is about the physician who chooses to mentor a future colleague. It is about the donor who understands that a contribution today can help shape healthcare in Oklahoma for decades to come.

The impact of OEFOM is measured not only in dollars raised or scholarships awarded, but in lives touched and futures changed. Every student we support carries forward the values of our profession and strengthens the legacy left by those who came before us.

As we look toward the future, I am filled with optimism. The excitement surrounding osteopathic medicine is growing, and the next generation of physicians is ready to lead. Their passion, determination and commitment remind us why investing in students is one of the most important things we can do.

The foundation of our profession was built by individuals who believed in those who would come after them. Today, we have the opportunity to continue that tradition. And after seeing the remarkable students who represent the future of osteopathic medicine, I can say with confidence that the investment is worth it.

The future is bright, and it is already taking shape in classrooms, clinics and communities across Oklahoma.
