Your Profession. Your Patients. Your Voice. The Time to Stand Together Is Now

The future of medicine is being shaped today. The question is not whether decisions will be made that affect your profession. The question is whether physicians will have a strong enough voice to influence those decisions. Every legislative session, every regulatory proposal and every health care policy discussion presents opportunities and challenges for Oklahoma physicians. Decisions made at the state Capitol and in Washington, D.C., can determine how you practice medicine, how you are reimbursed and, ultimately, how you care for your patients.

If physicians are not at the table when those decisions are made, someone else will make those decisions for us. That is why the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association exists. We are not simply a professional organization. We are an advocate, a defender and a united voice for osteopathic physicians and the patients they serve. And that voice must continue to grow stronger.

Physician-Led Health Care Is Nonnegotiable

The OOA remains steadfast in its commitment to physician-led health care. We believe the education, extensive clinical training and medical judgment of physicians are essential to delivering quality patient care and improving health outcomes. This commitment is not dependent upon who occupies the governor’s office, who controls the Legislature or which political party holds power in Oklahoma City or Washington D.C. Our commitment is to osteopathic medicine, our physicians and their patients.

Whether the issue is scope of practice, prior authorization, physician reimbursement, regulatory burdens or access to health care in rural Oklahoma, the OOA will continue to fight for policies that protect the physician-patient relationship. We cannot afford to be silent. We cannot afford to become complacent. And we certainly cannot afford to allow others to define the future of our profession without our involvement. Physician-led health care is not simply a talking point for the OOA. It is a principle we will continue to defend.

Membership Is More Than Paying Dues

There is strength in numbers, but numbers alone do not create influence. Influence comes when physicians unite behind a common purpose and are willing to make their voices heard. The OOA represents more than 2,250 members, and each member contributes to the strength and credibility of our association. Whether you are a hospitalist, an independent physician, employed by a large health system or practicing in a rural Oklahoma community, your membership matters. Your dues are more than a payment to an association. They are an investment in the future of osteopathic medicine.

Membership supports our legislative advocacy, communication with state and federal policymakers, continuing medical education, professional development and efforts to ensure physicians remain central to health care decisions. But there is something even more important. Your membership sends a message that you believe your profession is worth defending. When we walk into a legislator’s office, testify before a committee or meet with state agency leaders, we carry the collective voice of Oklahoma’s osteopathic physicians. That collective voice gives us strength. It gives us credibility. And it gives us the opportunity to influence meaningful change.

The Cost of Standing on the Sidelines

It is easy to assume someone else will fight the battles facing medicine. Someone else will contact the legislator. Someone else will challenge the regulation. Someone else will advocate for fair reimbursement. Someone else will defend physician-led health care. But what happens when everyone assumes someone else will do the work? The challenges facing medicine will not disappear because physicians choose not to engage. In fact, silence can make those challenges more difficult to overcome. We need every physician. We need every specialty. We need physicians from every corner of Oklahoma. Our profession is strongest when we recognize that the challenges facing one physician today may become the challenges facing every physician tomorrow. We must stand together today to protect the practice of medicine tomorrow.

Our Patients Are Counting on Us

At the heart of every policy debate is something far more important than legislation, reimbursement or regulation. It is the patient. Our patients depend upon physicians who have the education, experience and clinical judgment to make informed medical decisions. They deserve a health care system that respects the physician-patient relationship and puts quality care ahead of political convenience. When the OOA advocates for physician-led health care, we are advocating for patients. When we fight unnecessary administrative burdens, we are fighting for more time between physicians and their patients. When we advocate for fair reimbursement and improved access to care, we are working to strengthen health care delivery throughout Oklahoma. Our advocacy is not simply about protecting a profession. It is about protecting the people who depend upon that profession.

A Call to Action: Stand With Us

As we approach another legislative session, I am asking every osteopathic physician in Oklahoma to make a commitment. Renew your membership. Recruit a colleague. Become involved. Make your voice heard. If your membership has lapsed, now is the time to return. If you have never joined the OOA, now is the time to become part of an organization that fights for your profession. If you are already a member, thank you. But I am asking you to take one additional step: Encourage a fellow physician to join you. Imagine the influence we can have when every osteopathic physician in Oklahoma recognizes the importance of speaking with one united voice. We do not have to agree on every issue to recognize the importance of standing together on the issues that matter most.

The OOA will continue meeting with legislative leaders, monitoring proposed legislation, challenging policies that threaten physician-led health care and advocating for meaningful improvements in Oklahoma’s health care system. But an association is only as strong as the members who stand behind it. The future of osteopathic medicine is too important to leave to chance. Do not wait until legislation threatens your practice. Do not wait until a regulation affects your patients. Do not wait until someone else makes a decision that changes how you practice medicine.

Join the OOA. Renew your dues. Invite another physician to join. Get involved in our advocacy efforts. The time to stand together is not next year. It is not when a crisis develops. It is now.

Together, we can influence public policy. Together, we can protect physician-led health care. Together, we can strengthen osteopathic medicine and improve health outcomes for the patients we serve.

Your profession needs you. Your patients need you. Your association needs you.

We are DO Proud. We are stronger together.
