Honor the past. Invest in the future. Support OEFOM

I recently visited the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. It was not my first visit, but it seems that with every visit, I see something new and walk away with a renewed spirit.

As I walked through the museum, I was reminded that America was built by people willing to forge trails into difficult and uncertain territories. They faced challenges most of us can only imagine, yet they moved forward with determination and a belief that what they were building would matter to generations they would never meet.

In many ways, the story of osteopathic medicine is also the story of pioneers.

I was reminded of that during my visit to the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. Walking through the history of our profession gave me a deeper appreciation for the journey A.T. Still and the early osteopathic physicians traveled. They challenged conventional thinking, endured opposition and remained committed to a distinctive approach to medicine centered on caring for the whole person.

Their willingness to forge a new trail changed medicine and helped shape the care patients receive today.

Every osteopathic physician practicing today is part of that continuing journey. The white coat may look different from those worn by earlier generations, and medicine has advanced in ways our pioneers could scarcely have imagined, but the responsibility remains the same: Care for patients, advance the profession and leave osteopathic medicine stronger for those who follow.

That is also the mission of the Oklahoma Education Foundation of Osteopathic Medicine.

The foundation honors our past while investing in our future. Through scholarships, student support, educational initiatives and the promotion of osteopathic medicine, OEFOM helps ensure that the trail forged by previous generations continues for generations to come.

But preserving a legacy requires more than remembering it. It requires investing in it.

I encourage every osteopathic physician to consider making a gift to OEFOM. Whether your contribution is large or small, your support is an investment in osteopathic students, future physicians and the continued strength of our profession. Those who came before us built something worth preserving. Now it is our responsibility to help carry it forward.

The pioneers of osteopathic medicine gave us a remarkable legacy. Because of their journey, and because of physicians willing to continue investing in that journey, the future of osteopathic medicine remains bright.
